Caiques for Sale in Australia
Caiques (pronounced kigh-EEK) are often referred to as the clowns of the parrot world—and for good reason. They are playful, energetic, funny, acrobatic, and full of personality. With their vibrant plumage, these parrots always look like they’re dressed for a celebration. Medium in size and native to South America’s Amazon Basin, caiques are bold, fearless, and full of life, all in a compact body weighing under six ounces.
Lifespan
Caiques typically live between 25 to 40 years, and with proper diet and care, many live even longer.
Not for Beginners
Caiques are best suited for experienced bird owners. They require commitment and daily interaction, as they are lifelong companions who thrive on attention and stimulation.
Types of Caiques
There are two main species:
-
White-bellied Caique: Bright yellow-orange head, green wings and tail, pure white belly, and pink legs.
-
Black-headed Caique: Distinct black head with orange cheeks, green streaks beneath the eyes, green wings, beige belly, and gray legs and beak.
Why Choose a Caique?
These parrots are extremely intelligent and can be trained to do amusing tricks like playing dead or “dancing” when you clap rhythmically. They form strong bonds with their owners and love to be the center of attention.
Cage & Activity Needs
A cage at least 2 feet in size is recommended. Caiques are very active and should be let out daily for at least an hour of supervised exercise. Interestingly, they prefer walking and hopping to flying, and they love to explore—so keeping an eye on them is essential. Their beaks are strong, so offer durable toys to keep them entertained and reduce destructive chewing.
Diet & Nutrition
A balanced caique diet should include:
-
Fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts
-
High-quality extruded pellets
-
Clean, fresh water daily
Avoid feeding them harmful items like avocado pits, raw onions, candy, chips, alcohol, or rhubarb.
Offering a birdbath with lukewarm water occasionally is also beneficial for their hygiene and enrichment.
